Jovan is John, in the form the name takes across Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro. In America it also arrived a second time, in a bottle: for about a decade a musk oil in a plain brown bottle was one of the best-selling scents in the country, and its name was on every drugstore shelf in the years this name was rising.

The story of Jovan
The scent came out at the start of the 1970s, sold in a way nothing else was sold at the time — inexpensive, unisex in effect if not in marketing, and advertised with a directness that department-store perfume did not use. Within a few years it was one of the largest fragrance brands in America and the word was familiar to millions of people who had never met anyone called Jovan. The name was already in the record before the bottle appeared, carried by Serbian and Macedonian families, but the years it climbed fastest are exactly the years the bottle was everywhere, and it is difficult to look at the two lines and see no connection.
Meaning
God is gracious
The name descends through Greek from the Hebrew phrase behind every John in Europe, and the Slavic form keeps the Greek shape rather than the Latin one. It has nothing at all to do with Jove, despite the resemblance — the English word jovial really does mean born under Jupiter, from the old belief that the planet you were born under fixed your temperament, and it is one of the few pieces of astrology still buried in ordinary English. Jovan is not part of that story. The similarity is a coincidence of two unrelated languages.
How the name formed
- Hebrew Yohanan through Greek Ioannes
- Jovan established across the southern Slavic world
- carried to America by Serbian and Macedonian families
- an American musk oil takes the name in the early 1970s
- peaks at the end of that decade

Fashion outlook
Jovan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a genuinely international form of one of the most universal names in Europe.
- It suits a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
- The sound is strong and open, and it shortens easily in two directions.
- The j is read two ways depending on who is speaking, and he will answer to both.
- For Americans over fifty the first association may be a fragrance rather than a name.
- It is stepping back from its peak, so it will read as slightly of an earlier generation.
