Jorden
Masculine · “one who descends”
Jorden is given to both — 7,030 boys and 2,335 girls since 1880. See Jorden as a girl nameSee other names given to both
In English, Jorden and Jordan are the same word spoken aloud. The final syllable is reduced to almost nothing either way, and no ear can separate them. In Danish and Norwegian, though, jorden is not a name at all: it is the ordinary everyday word for the earth, the noun with its definite article stuck on the back.

The story of Jorden
English swallows unstressed final syllables so thoroughly that whole spelling debates are conducted over sounds nobody makes. The vowel between the d and the n here is a schwa, the neutral grunt English reaches for whenever a syllable carries no weight, and a schwa can be written with almost any letter. That is why the a-spelling and the e-spelling both persist and why neither can claim to be the more accurate one. The Danish coincidence is genuine but is not the source: a Scandinavian family writing jorden means the earth, and an American family writing Jorden means the river, and the two arrived at the same six letters from opposite directions.
Meaning
one who descends; from the river Jordan
Hebrew Yarden, from a root meaning to go down. The river is named for its descent, and the name is the river's rather than the other way round. The e-spelling changes nothing about any of that.

The Javonte test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jorden's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Javonte climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Javonte's path sketches the road Jorden is walking now.
Jorden sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is instantly familiar without being the standard spelling.
- The sound is settled even when the spelling is not, so it is never mispronounced.
- It carries several short forms of quite different registers.
- The spelling will be corrected to Jordan for the rest of the child's life.
- The record holds girls as well, and the girl is now the smaller side of the name.
- It sits close to its recent peak, so it reads as belonging to a particular decade.
