The story of Jordanne
Jordan almonds, the sugar-coated almonds handed out at weddings, are usually explained not by the river but by French jardin, 'garden': they were garden almonds, the cultivated kind. In 1974 Barbara Jordan of Texas, the first Black woman elected to Congress from the South, opened her remarks at the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment hearings by saying that her faith in the Constitution was whole, complete and total; the speech made her a national figure overnight. Jordanne is one of the ways families have made Jordan a daughter's name.
