Where it comes from

The story of Jonothan

The Jonathan of the Hebrew Bible is a king's son who backs the man who is going to replace his family. He is heir to the throne; David is the rival his father is trying to kill; and Jonathan warns him, covers for him, and makes a formal agreement with him that his own house will not rule. The text says he loved him as his own soul, and it says it more than once, in the middle of a political narrative that has no other interest in anybody's feelings. Whatever else is going on in those chapters, the writer is describing a man choosing a friend over a dynasty, and choosing it deliberately.

Meaning

God has given

The Hebrew joins a shortened form of the divine name to a verb about giving. It is not a longer version of John: that name is a different Hebrew sentence with a different second half, and the two have been confused in English for centuries.

Fashion outlook

Jonothan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, warm and easy to tell a child.
  • It has two very different short forms, both of them established.
  • The name is recognized across the Western world.
What to consider
  • Jonathan is the standard spelling and his will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The changed letter is invisible in speech, so he will spell it out rather than repeat it.
  • It will be assumed to be a long form of John, which it is not.
