Joleigh
Feminine · “he will add' through Jo”
Joleigh joins one of the oldest short forms in English to one of the most-borrowed spellings in modern American naming. Jo has been standing in for Joseph, Joanna and Josephine for four centuries; -leigh is an Anglo-Saxon place-name ending detached from its own history. The combination is entirely modern, and its peak is 2017.

Our story of Joleigh
Jo is a remarkable survivor. It has been in continuous English use as a short form since at least the seventeenth century, it works on either sex, and unlike almost every other clipping it has never sounded dated — Jo in 1650, Jo in Little Women, Jo today, all read the same. That durability makes it unusually good raw material. A front element that carries no generational marker can be joined to whatever ending is current and the result sounds new without sounding strange: Jolene in the 1970s, Jolie in the 1990s, Joleigh in the 2010s. Each of those is Jo plus the fashionable tail of its decade, and each will date to that decade while the Jo inside it stays exactly where it was. That is worth knowing when choosing one: the front will age well and the ending will not.

'he will add' through Jo; the ending carries nothing
Jo descends most often from Joanna or Josephine, and both go back to Hebrew — Yosef, 'he will add', for Joseph and its feminine; Yohanan, 'Yahweh is gracious', for Joanna. Which of the two stands behind a given Jo is a family matter. The -leigh ending comes from Old English leah, a woodland clearing, by way of place names and surnames, but it is used here as a spelling rather than as a word. Half the name has a meaning and half does not.

The Tyann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joleigh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tyann climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tyann's path sketches the road Joleigh is walking now.
Joleigh sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
