Johnsie
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Johnsie has an s in it that no part of the name asks for. The full name ends in a consonant cluster and the pet ending begins with a vowel, and English put a joining consonant between them because the alternative would not have been sayable. The s is scaffolding rather than spelling.

The story of Johnsie
England has never had a second king of this name, and the first is the reason. He lost Normandy, taxed the country to try to get it back, quarreled with the pope until the kingdom was placed under interdict and no church bell rang for six years, and was forced by his own barons to seal a charter limiting what he could do, which he then repudiated within weeks. His reputation was fixed within a century of his death and has never recovered. Since then the name has gone to princes and to a great many commoners and to no monarch at all, and the avoidance is deliberate enough that it is remarked on whenever a royal child is named. Meanwhile the name itself remained the commonest man's name in the language for six hundred years.
Meaning
God is gracious
The Hebrew behind John is a short sentence about God showing favor, and the pet form carries all of it without stating any of it. Nothing in the ending adds meaning; nothing in the inserted s does either. A woman's pet form of a man's name was ordinary in the American South, and it does not imply that the child was named for anybody in particular.

Pronouncing Johnsie
JON-see
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The s belongs to the second syllable rather than the first, which is why the name is JON-see and not JONS-ee, and it is the only thing making the join possible.

Fashion outlook
Johnsie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and easy to say, with nothing in it a small child will struggle with.
- It is genuinely uncommon without containing any unfamiliar sound.
- The formal name behind it is one of the best known in the world.
- It reads as a Southern American name of a particular period, which is either the point or the problem.
- Johnsie, Johnsy and Jonsie all exist, so spelling it out is permanent.
- A pet form on a certificate leaves nothing more formal underneath.
Nobody names a baby alone.
