Where it comes from

The story of Johnney

The letter was addressed to the Byzantine emperor and described a kingdom with a river of stones, a fountain of youth and a mirror that showed every province at once, ruled by a priest-king who called seventy other kings his servants. It was copied for four hundred years and translated into every European language. Portuguese navigators went down the African coast partly in hope of finding him, and the search eventually attached itself to Ethiopia, which was Christian, which was ruled by an emperor, and which had nothing else to do with the story. It was one of the more productive misunderstandings in the history of exploration.

Meaning

God is gracious

The Hebrew behind John is a short sentence about God showing favor. This spelling is the pet form of it with two extra letters, which is an American habit of the period: take the everyday name a boy is actually called and enter that on the certificate.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled n and the final e are both silent in effect, so this spelling sounds exactly like the ordinary one.

Fashion outlook

Johnney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is warm, familiar and understood everywhere in English.
  • John sits behind it as a formal name for a signature.
  • It has been in continuous American use for well over a century.
What to consider
  • Johnny is the standard spelling and will be written by everyone else.
  • A pet form as a legal name can read as informal on a document.
  • Neither of the extra letters changes anything audible.
