The root is the Hebrew Yohanan, carried into Greek as Ioannes by the writers of the Gospels — where it belongs to John the Baptist and John the Evangelist — and into Latin as Iohannes. Medieval Europe took that Latin form and reshaped it in every language it touched: John in English, Jean in French, Juan in Spanish, Johannes in German and Dutch. Johan is the trimmed continental version of Johannes, long standard in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In the United States it has arrived by two roads at once — brought by northern European families, and taken up independently as a given name among Spanish-speaking families in the Americas.
