Where it comes from

Our story of Jocie

Gothic architecture was named by people who despised it. Renaissance Italians looked at the pointed arches and flying buttresses of northern Europe, compared them unfavourably with the round arches they were reviving, and reached for the worst word they had: Gothic, meaning barbarian, after the people they held responsible for wrecking Rome. Vasari uses it that way, as a straightforward insult, and the term stuck for two centuries as a synonym for crude and disorderly. The rehabilitation came in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the same buildings were reinterpreted as the summit of Christian art and half of England was rebuilt in imitation of them. The insult is now simply the name of the style, used with no sense of judgment at all — and the actual Goths had nothing to do with any of it.

Josephine is Hebrew, Jocelyn is Germanic and Joyce is Breton, and all three yield this short form. They have nothing in common. Registered alone, the short form points back to none of them.

Fashion outlook

Jocie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jo comes off it at once and works for a child of any age.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • The c makes the middle sound unambiguous, which the s spelling does not.
What to consider
  • Josie is far commoner and will be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
  • Which longer name it belongs to is not recorded, so the answer has to be a family one.
