Joceline was a man's name for about eight hundred years and a woman's for about one. That is a long innings for one sex and a very short one for the other, and the crossing happened so completely that almost nobody now meeting the name would guess it had a medieval life at all, let alone that the medieval life belonged to bishops and chroniclers.

Where it comes from

The story of Joceline

One medieval Jocelin left something remarkable. A monk at Bury St Edmunds in the twelfth century kept a chronicle of his abbey, and unlike most such documents it is not a list of donations and deaths but a close, gossipy, very human account of how an institution actually ran: the election of an abbot, the arguments about money, the personalities, the compromises. It sat unread for centuries until a nineteenth-century essayist found it, was electrified, and built an entire book around it as a picture of a functioning medieval community held up against the industrial present. The chronicle has been in print ever since. It is one of the few sources that lets a modern reader hear medieval people negotiating with each other, and it survives because one monk decided the ordinary business of his house was worth writing down.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name comes into English from a Norman form built on a Germanic tribal name, and the tribe's own name has no settled meaning. A separate line of descent from a Breton saint's name has also been proposed and cannot be ruled out. Either way the sense is not recoverable, and the readings offered in reference works are attempts rather than findings. The -ine ending on this spelling is a French feminine marker added long afterwards.

How the name formed

  1. A Norman name built on a Germanic tribal name
  2. A man's name in England for eight centuries
  3. Jocelyn crossing to girls in the twentieth century
  4. Joceline, with a French feminine ending

Pronouncing Joceline

JOSS-uh-leen

Three syllables with the stress on the first and the ending said as een rather than as in. That is what the -ine spelling is for: Jocelyn ends in a reduced syllable and this one does not, so the two spellings are genuinely different names in speech.

Fashion outlook

Joceline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The -ine ending gives it a definite ending that the commoner spelling lacks.
  • Joss and Celine are two very different short forms and both stand alone.
  • It has a long documented history in English, which most names with this shape do not.
What to consider
  • Jocelyn is the standard spelling and this one will be converted into it constantly.
  • The final syllable is said two ways depending on which spelling people think they are reading.
  • There is no settled meaning, and the proposed ones are guesses at a tribal name.
