The story of Joanie
Joan was the ordinary English form of the feminine John through most of the Middle Ages — so ordinary that it was used the way 'Jane Doe' is used now, as a name standing in for any woman at all. It was largely displaced by Jane and Joanna, then revived. Joanie is the American pet form of it. It is worth knowing that Joan is not always a woman's name: in Catalan, Joan is the ordinary form of John and belongs to men, which surprises English speakers reading a Barcelona program.
Meaning
the Lord is gracious
Through Joan, from Old French Jehanne, from Latin Iohanna, the feminine of Iohannes — Hebrew Yochanan, 'the Lord is gracious'. Joanie is a diminutive of Joan and adds nothing to the meaning; the -ie is the affectionate English ending also found in Katie and Annie.
