Joan was the commonest woman's name in medieval England and then disappeared for three hundred years. In some fifteenth-century parishes a quarter of the women carried it; by the eighteenth century it had become a name for a countrywoman in a play, and nobody used it again until the Victorians went looking.

Where it comes from

The story of Joane

There is also a Joan who never existed and was believed in for four hundred years. The story of a woman who disguised herself, rose through the church and was elected pope, only to give birth during a procession, appears in the thirteenth century and is repeated as fact in standard reference works, chronicles and guidebooks until the seventeenth, when a Protestant scholar of all people demonstrated it could not be true. A bust of her stood among the popes in Siena cathedral until it was quietly recarved as somebody else. The legend was not a joke or a satire when it circulated; it was simply what people thought had happened, which is a useful thing to know about what counted as history.

Meaning

God is gracious

The feminine of John, from a Hebrew sentence about God showing favor, arriving through French Jehanne. The final e in this spelling is a medieval habit that survived in a few names and is silent; it does not change the sound and it does not make the name French.

Fashion outlook

Joane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name has a documented English history running back eight hundred years.
  • Jo and Joanie are two short forms in different registers.
  • It is short, plain and impossible to mishear once the syllable count is settled.
What to consider
  • Two live pronunciations, one of them identical to a man's name.
  • Joan without the e is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American ears.
