Jireh
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “he will see”
Jireh is given to both — 1,898 boys and 1,304 girls since 1880. See Jireh as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Jireh comes from one of the most quoted moments in Genesis: Abraham names a mountain YHWH-Yireh after the ram is found in the thicket. For most of its life it was a phrase rather than a name — spoken in sermons, printed in the margins of Bibles, sung in hymns. Only in recent decades has it been given to children, and it arrives with its spelling already fixed by four centuries of English translation.
How old is the name Jireh?

The story of Jireh
In Genesis 22, after the ram appears, Abraham gives the place the name YHWH-Yireh. It is a place name and a statement about God, not a person's name — no one in scripture is called Jireh. English Bibles from the King James onward printed it as Jehovah-Jireh, which set the J-spelling that American parents use today. The detached second half began appearing as a given name in US records only in the last few decades, and a widely sung worship song titled "Jireh", released in the early 2020s by Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music, put the word in front of a very large audience at exactly the moment its use as a name accelerated.
Meaning
"he will see" — in context, "the Lord will provide"
The Hebrew verb ra'ah means "to see"; yir'eh is "he will see." In Genesis 22 the sense carried by the phrase YHWH-Yireh is that God sees to it — provides. English Bibles have long rendered the place name as "Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord will provide," and that reading is the one most families have in mind.

Pronouncing Jireh
JY-ruh
Three pronunciations are genuinely in use. JY-ruh follows the older English Bible reading; juh-RAY is how many hear it from contemporary worship music; and in Spanish-speaking congregations the J takes an H sound, giving HEE-reh. Whichever you choose, expect to say it twice at first.

The Brandin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jireh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brandin climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brandin's path sketches the road Jireh is walking now.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, no silent letters — easy to write once heard, and the spelling is already fixed by centuries of Bible printing.
- Instantly recognizable to anyone who knows Genesis 22, which gives it a ready explanation in most churchgoing families.
- Works in both English- and Spanish-speaking households, which matches where it is strongest in the US.
- Uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to meet another one at school.
- There is no single agreed pronunciation. JY-ruh, juh-RAY and HEE-reh are all in live use, so your child will spend some of their life correcting people — or quietly accepting whichever version arrives.
- It is an explicitly devotional name, naming God rather than a person. That is the point for many families, but it does declare something about the household on every roster and job application.
- Outside church contexts the word is unfamiliar, so expect it to be read slowly, written as Jira or Jerah, and asked about often.
- The name is climbing quickly. It is rare now, but a child born today may find it less unusual by the time they finish school.
