Jilian
Feminine · “of the Julian family”
Jilian is Jillian with one l, and that single letter does real work: in English a doubled consonant is the usual signal that the vowel before it is short, so removing one leaves a reader momentarily unsure whether the name begins like Jill or like Jai.

The story of Jilian
Juliana of Nicomedia is the figure the medieval versions of this name cluster around, and her legend is not a gentle one. She refuses to marry a Roman official, is tortured at his order, and then, in the version that medieval Europe loved best, is visited in prison by a demon disguised as an angel. She sees through him, seizes him, and beats a confession out of him about every trick he has ever used, after which she drags him around the prison on a chain and finally throws him down a well. An Old English poet wrote the whole thing up in verse, and medieval illustrators returned to the scene again and again, usually with obvious enjoyment. It is a strange and vivid inheritance for a name that now reads as entirely gentle.

Fashion outlook
Jilian sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name is entirely familiar in sound, so nobody is ever stuck for how to say it.
- Jill is available as a short form from the first day and has centuries of use behind it.
- A documented line runs back to Roman naming, which very few modern spellings can claim.
- Jillian and Gillian are both commoner, and the second l will be added by most people writing it down.
- The missing l makes a reader hesitate over the first vowel, which is a small cost paid repeatedly.
- Gillian is said with a hard g by some British speakers, so the name travels less cleanly than it looks.
