Jhonathan
Masculine · “Yahweh has given”
Jhonathan has an h where no English name puts one, and the h is doing a specific job. Spanish j is said as a hard h, so an English name beginning with J cannot be read correctly in Spanish; Colombian and Venezuelan naming solved that by writing Jh, which cues the English sound. Its American peak is 2000.

The story of Jhonathan
Jonathan is the son of Saul in the First Book of Samuel, and his friendship with David is one of the most extensively described relationships in the Hebrew Bible. The name entered English use at the Reformation and became very popular in America from the 1970s. Its arrival in Spanish-speaking Latin America brought a spelling problem: Jonathan read by Spanish rules gives ho-nah-TAN. Colombian and Venezuelan naming, which has adopted many English names, developed the Jh- device to force the English J — producing Jhon, Jhonny, Jhoan and Jhonathan, all of which are ordinary there and puzzling everywhere else.
Meaning
Yahweh has given
Hebrew Yehonatan joins yeho, a form of the divine name, to natan, 'he gave' — so Yahweh has given. The shorter Yonatan gives the same sense. Nathaniel is the same idea with a different word for God, and Matthew is the same idea again through a different root. The inserted h in this spelling carries no meaning and is purely a pronunciation cue. The derivation is settled.

Pronouncing Jhonathan
JON-uh-thun
Three syllables, stress on the first, exactly as Jonathan. The h is silent in English and does nothing but signal to a Spanish reader that the J should be said the English way — which is precisely its purpose.

The Ruston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jhonathan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ruston climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ruston's path sketches the road Jhonathan is walking now.
Jhonathan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and expressible in three words.
- Jon and Nathan are both complete names available as short forms.
- The spelling produces the correct sound for Spanish readers, which the plain form does not.
- It will be corrected to Jonathan by essentially everyone in English-speaking settings.
- The Jh- device is unfamiliar outside northern South America.
- Three syllables plus an unfamiliar spelling makes it slow to give over the phone.
