Where it comes from

The story of Jessejames

Jesse Woodson James robbed banks and trains across Missouri and its neighbors after the Civil War, and newspapers and dime novels turned him into a hero. By the end he was living quietly in St. Joseph, Missouri, as Mr. Thomas Howard, when Robert Ford, a new member of his own gang with an eye on the reward, shot him from behind as he stood on a chair to straighten a picture. A ballad soon called Ford the dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard, and the song kept the name traveling. Jessejames closes the first and last names into one, a pattern the record also shows in names like Johnpaul.

Fashion outlook

Jessejames sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Its source is completely clear, and the story behind it is widely known.
  • Jesse and JJ are ready short forms.
  • Both halves are old, established names.
What to consider
  • Everyone will connect it with the outlaw, a man whose gang robbed and killed, and not everyone admires the legend.
  • As one word it confuses forms that expect a first and a last name; some will split it or ask whether James is his surname.
