Where it comes from

The story of Jesiah

The name appears twice in Chronicles, once among the Levites and once among the descendants of Issachar, and English translations have never agreed on how to spell it, which is why Jesiah, Isshiah and Ishijah all appear in different bibles for the same person. Quite separately, American families in the last two decades have been building names by blending biblical ones, and Jesiah sits exactly where Jesse and Josiah meet. It is given to both sexes.

Meaningscholars disagree

the Lord lends, or the Lord exists

The Hebrew name in Chronicles is Yishshiyyah, generally read as the Lord lends or the Lord exists, and English bibles render it Isshiah or Jesiah depending on the translation. The modern American name is more often a blend of Jesse and Josiah, in which case none of that carries.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Siah works as a short form and is increasingly a name in its own right.
  • It has a genuine biblical spelling behind it, which its rhyme partners often do not.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which some families want.
What to consider
  • Bible translations spell the name three different ways, so the biblical connection is hard to point at.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling settles neither.
  • Jesiah, Josiah and Isaiah are close enough to be confused constantly.
