The story of Jerusha
English Puritans took the principle that scripture was the proper source of names entirely seriously, and they did not limit themselves to the famous. The genealogies, the lists of officials and the parenthetical mothers of kings all supplied names, which is how Jerusha, Keziah, Zibiah, Abijah, Jedidah and Hephzibah reached New England and then the American frontier. Several of them are known only from a single verse recording a birth or a marriage. The practice produced a distinctive layer in the American records, visible through the nineteenth century and gone by the 1920s, and it is one of the reasons American naming diverged from English naming: the same Bible was available in both countries, and only one of them mined the footnotes.
