The story of Jeromy
The Latin church had a patchwork of old translations, all made from the Greek Septuagint, when Damasus asked Jerome to produce a standard text in 382. Jerome went to Bethlehem, learned Hebrew from Jewish teachers, and translated the Old Testament from the original rather than from the Greek, which was controversial: Augustine wrote to him worried that congregations would riot when familiar verses changed, and in at least one North African town they did. The result, later called the Vulgate, became the Bible of western Europe until the Reformation and the official text of the Catholic Church until the twentieth century. Jerome is usually painted with a lion, from a legend that he removed a thorn from its paw, and with a skull, a hat he never wore and a study full of books.

Jeromy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ivory climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ivory's path sketches the road Jeromy is walking now.
