The story of Jermiah
Jeremiah is the prophet of the Babylonian exile, whose book is the longest in the Hebrew Bible and whose name gave English the word jeremiad for a long complaint. Greek wrote it Ieremias and Latin Jeremias, and the English Bible restored something closer to the Hebrew. It became an American name through Protestant biblical naming, went quiet for much of the twentieth century, and returned with the wider revival of Old Testament names. The spelling without the middle e is an American development of the last few decades.

The Viet test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jermiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Viet climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Viet's path sketches the road Jermiah is walking now.
Jermiah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has several genuinely different short forms, Miah, Jay and Jem, so a child can choose their register.
- The biblical name behind it is known everywhere in the English-speaking world.
- It is long and formal on paper while being easy in the mouth.
- Jeremiah is overwhelmingly the standard spelling; the missing e will be restored by teachers, doctors and forms.
- Spelled this way it can read as an error rather than a choice, which is a small tax paid often.
- The full name is in heavy use, so the child may meet several others under the short form Miah.
