Where it comes from

The story of Jeramey

Jeremy grew up as the English form of Jeremiah and was an ordinary name for centuries. The philosopher Jeremy Bentham left instructions that after his death in 1832 his body be dissected for science and his skeleton, dressed in his own clothes, be kept on display; his 'auto-icon' still sits in a cabinet at University College London. In 1906 Beatrix Potter published The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, about a frog who goes fishing from a lily pad and is nearly swallowed by a trout. Jeramey is one of the respellings that followed the name's American revival in the later twentieth century.
