The story of Jerad
Jared belongs to the genealogy in Genesis that runs from Adam to Noah, and his place in it is quietly remarkable: he is the father of Enoch, the one man in that list who does not die. The text says simply that Enoch walked with God, and was not, for God took him, and then moves on. Puritan families revived the name from that list in the seventeenth century, and America has used it ever since, in waves. Jerad is one of a set of respellings that appeared in the twentieth century alongside Jarrod, Jerrod and Jarod, all of them recording the same two syllables with different letters.
