Jennefer writes the middle vowel as an e, and in a name where that syllable is barely pronounced at all the letter is a free choice. The woman at the far end of the name is abducted in almost every telling of the story she belongs to, and in the earliest surviving version she is not abducted at all: she goes willingly, which the later tradition worked very hard to undo.

Where it comes from

The story of Jennefer

The oldest surviving version of the abduction is in a Latin life of a Welsh saint written around eleven hundred, and it has a king of Somerset carry her off and Arthur besiege the fortress to get her back. Later romances add a rescuer, add remorse, add a convent at the end. But there is a strand in the earliest Welsh material that treats her as complicit, and a triad that lists her among the faithless women of the island, and the whole later tradition of the doomed love story is in part an attempt to explain that away sympathetically. What survives in the modern imagination is the romantic version, which is about six hundred years younger than the awkward one.

white shadow

The Brythonic original joins an element meaning white or fair with one usually read as a phantom or a smooth thing, and the second half is not securely established. The reading is the standard one and should be given with the qualification attached. The respelled middle vowel changes nothing: it is a reduced syllable and any letter will stand there without a listener noticing.

How the name formed

  1. A Brythonic compound about whiteness
  2. The queen of the Welsh and then the French Arthurian material
  3. Jennifer surviving in Cornwall while the rest of England forgot it
  4. Jennefer as an American respelling of a reduced vowel

Three syllables, stress on the first, with the middle one reduced almost to nothing. That reduction is exactly why the vowel there can be written as an i, an e or an a without changing what anybody hears.

Fashion outlook

Jennefer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally known and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Jen is available from the first day and is completely unremarkable.
  • It carries a genuinely old Brythonic name behind a very modern reputation.
What to consider
  • Jennifer is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The name is very closely tied to one American generation.
  • The respelled vowel is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
