Jenna
Feminine · “fair”
Jenna is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 148,587 girls against 255 boys since 1880.
Jenna is the kind of name English has been quietly manufacturing for centuries: take a longer name, keep the bright first syllable, and let it end on an open vowel. It arrived in American records early in the twentieth century as a written-down cousin of Jenny, and it turns out to belong to more than one language — Finnish parents took it up independently and have kept it in steady use.

The story of Jenna
Jenna's paper trail is short and mostly American. Jenny had been the everyday short form of both Jane and Jennifer for generations, and Jenna is what happens when that nickname is respelled as a name in its own right — a move English has made over and over, as with Jessa, Ella and Etta. It stayed rare for decades before the soap opera Dallas gave a major character the name Jenna Wade in the early 1980s, after which the spelling spread quickly across the English-speaking world. Meanwhile Finland adopted Jenna on its own account, alongside Jenni and Jenna's relative Johanna, so the name now sits comfortably in two unrelated naming traditions.

'fair, white' or 'God is gracious', depending on which longer name you trace it back to
Jenna is generally read as an elaborated form of Jenny, and Jenny served as the pet form of two different names. Through Jennifer it reaches back to the Welsh Gwenhwyfar, understood as 'white, fair' plus 'smooth' or 'phantom'. Through Jane and Johanna it reaches Hebrew Yohanan, 'God is gracious'. Both lines are legitimate, and no single origin can be pinned on the spelling itself.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jenna went to 418 girls in 2025, but Jennah and Jena are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 473, which makes it the 535th most-given girls’ name of the year — 144 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,398 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 3,845 for Jenna itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kathryn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kathryn climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kathryn's path sketches the road Jenna is walking now.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and five letters that an English speaker reads correctly on first sight — no pronunciation lesson required.
- Comes with ready-made short forms, Jen and Jenny, both in genuine everyday use rather than invented for the occasion.
- Works in more than one naming tradition: established in the English-speaking world and independently in Finland.
- Short enough for a small child to write, and it pairs easily with both short and long surnames.
- The spelling competes with Jena, Genna and Jennah, so expect to spell it aloud occasionally — though Jenna is the form most people default to.
- Jen and Jenny lead many people to assume the full name is Jennifer, which may mean correcting the record now and then.
- The name is closely tied to the generation now in its late twenties and thirties, so it reads contemporary-recent rather than antique — it has not yet had the long rest that makes a name feel newly rediscovered.
