Morphine came from the god of sleep by way of the poppy, quinine from the Quechua name for the bark, nicotine from the diplomat who sent tobacco to a French queen, and caffeine from coffee. Every one of them is a woman's-name ending in French doing service as a technical suffix, which chemistry has never seen any reason to change.
