Where it comes from

Our story of Jenea

Geneva and Genoa are eight hundred miles apart, one on a lake and one on the sea, and travelers have been mixing them up since at least the Middle Ages. There may be a reason beyond the spelling. Both names appear to go back to a pre-Roman word, probably Celtic or Ligurian, built on a root meaning a bend or a knee, which is exactly what a river mouth and a curved harbor both are. The derivation is not certain and the two cities have never much liked being lumped together. But the possibility that the Swiss city on the Rhône and the Italian port on the Gulf carry the same ancient word for a bend is the sort of thing that makes a map worth reading slowly. Jenea has nothing to do with either. It only sounds as though it might.

Fashion outlook

Jenea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, soft and pleasant to say, and no part of it is difficult.
  • Jen comes off the front as a short form that everyone already knows.
  • It is rare in the record while sounding entirely ordinary, which is a comfortable combination.
What to consider
  • Two readings are in circulation and the spelling chooses neither, so the correction gets made on most first meetings.
  • It will be written Jenae, Jenay and Janea by people working from sound.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
