Jazzmin

Feminine · “the jasmine flower”

The s in Jasmine is said as a z, which English never bothered to write down. Jazzmin writes it — twice, in fact — and the doubling has a second effect: it puts the word jazz on the page. The flower itself came to Europe from Persia, where its name is yasamin, and traveled through Arabic and then French before English got it.

Where it comes from

The story of Jazzmin

Jasmine became an English women's name in the nineteenth century, alongside the other flower names, and became very widely used in America in the 1980s and 1990s. Once a name is that common the spellings multiply, and this family produced an unusual number — Jazmin, Jasmin, Jazmine, Jazzmin, Yasmin, Yasmeen. The double z is the boldest of them: it writes the sound accurately, marks the name as a family's own, and puts an entire American musical form into the middle of a Persian flower.

Meaning

the jasmine flower

From the Persian yasamin, the name of the flowering shrub, borrowed into Arabic as yasamin and into French as jasmin. The plant reached European gardens in the sixteenth century and the word came with it. The name is simply the flower, in the same way that Rose and Violet are.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling writes the sound honestly, which the standard version does not.
  • Jazz is available as a short form and needs no explanation to anyone.
  • The flower has a documented route across three languages, which is a good story in one sentence.
  • It is entirely readable on sight.
What to consider
  • Jasmine and Jazmin are both far commoner and will be written instead.
  • The double z is a strong visual choice, and people will have opinions about it.
  • The name family has been very heavily used, so a girl will meet many near-namesakes.
