Our story of Javon
The tenth chapter of Genesis lists the descendants of Noah and it is really a map: each name is a people or a place, arranged by family. Javan is the Greeks, and the word is the same as Ionia, the Greek-settled coast of Asia Minor, which is what the whole Greek world was called by everybody to the east of it. The same word reached Persian as Yauna, Sanskrit as Yavana and Arabic as Yunan, which is still the Arabic name for Greece. So Greece is called after one region of it in half the languages of Asia, because that was the part its neighbors met first.

Javan in Genesis stands for a people rather than an individual. Whether an American Javon comes from that name or was built from a free prefix and a free ending is not recorded, and the record holds the spelling for both sexes.

The Helen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Javon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Helen climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Helen's path sketches the road Javon is walking now.

The trade-off
- Jay comes off the front as a short form and works for either sex.
- It is short on paper and quick to write.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
- Javan, Javion and Jevon are all in the record and will be confused with it.
- No origin is documented for this spelling, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
