Before she was the face that launched the ships, Helen was a goddess. Sparta had a shrine to her, girls danced there, and a plane tree was hung with offerings in her name — which is a strange thing to find behind a character usually described as the cause of a war.

Where it comes from

The story of Helen

The archaeology at Sparta is unambiguous: there was a cult of Helen and Menelaus at a site outside the city from at least the eighth century before Christ, with dedications addressed to her by name, and it looks like the remains of a goddess who was worshipped for fertility and for the protection of young women. Homer's Helen is a later thing, a woman in a story. What English inherited is a third layer again: the name arrived through Latin and produced Helen, Ellen and — by way of Old French — Elaine, which English treats as three separate names when they are one, said by three different sets of people.

Not established

The name has no established meaning. Connections to Greek words for a torch, for the moon and for a wicker basket have all been proposed, and the honest answer is that it is older than the language that would explain it.

Helen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 92 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Helen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a form in every European language and is recognized across all of them.
  • It carries an unusually large set of short forms, several of them full names.
  • Everyone can spell it and say it on first hearing.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept and a documented history nearly three thousand years longer.
What to consider
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so books that give one confidently are guessing.
  • It is strongly associated with the first half of the twentieth century in America.
  • The spelling is recorded for a small number of boys, though it reads overwhelmingly as a girl's name.
