The story of Javier
The name comes from the castle of Xavier in Navarre, whose Basque name Etxeberria means "new house." Francis Xavier, born there in the sixteenth century and a founding member of the Jesuits, carried it out of the valley and around the world; wherever Jesuit missions went, the name followed. In Spanish the old x sound shifted over the centuries to the throaty j, and the spelling shifted with it, which is why Javier and Xavier are the same name wearing different clothes. In the United States it has been recorded for more than a century, with the deepest roots in California, Texas and Florida.
