Where it comes from

The story of Jaqueline

Jacqueline was a name of the French and Burgundian nobility — Jacqueline of Hainaut ruled three counties in the fifteenth century — and it came into English use in the twentieth, rising very sharply in the 1950s and 1960s. American families respelled it heavily, and Jaqueline appears in the registers in real numbers, peaking in the mid-1990s, largely through Hispanic families.

Meaning

heel-holder, supplanter

Through Jacqueline and Jacques, from the Latin Iacomus and so from the Hebrew Ya'aqov. Genesis explains it by the birth of twins, the younger gripping the elder's heel. French added -line to Jacques to make the feminine; the c is part of the French spelling of Jacques and this form drops it.

Jaqueline sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 1,200 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaqueline went to 66 girls in 2025, but Jacqueline is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 607, which makes it the 451st most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,156 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,648 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 24,353 for Jaqueline itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
