Where it comes from

The story of Jannifer

Until the twentieth century the name was Cornish and almost nowhere else: local, unremarkable there, unknown in London. A playwright put it on a character in a play of the nineteen-hundreds, which was the first many English readers had seen of it, and from there it spread slowly and then very fast indeed, becoming for a stretch the most used woman's name in the English-speaking world. A county's local name became a global one inside sixty years. The respellings, of which this is one, arrived in the middle of that climb — the reliable sign that a name is being heard far more often than it is being read.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is the Cornish form of Guinevere, and Guinevere's own elements — usually read as white and smooth, or white and phantom — are argued over. Three steps of borrowing and a respelling separate this from that, and no meaning can be claimed with confidence.

Fashion outlook

Jannifer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is universally recognized and easy everywhere.
  • It has warm, established short forms.
  • The spelling is rare while the name is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Jennifer is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The altered vowel is inaudible, so the spelling must be given rather than said.
  • The name is strongly associated with particular decades.
