The story of Jancarlo
On the night of the twenty-third of February nineteen eighty-one, armed Civil Guards took the Spanish parliament hostage, tanks came onto the streets in Valencia, and the country's six-year-old democracy looked finished. The king spent the night on the telephone to regional commanders, and at around one in the morning he appeared on television in the uniform of captain general of the armed forces and ordered the army to stand down and uphold the constitution. The remaining units backed off; the coup was over by noon. It is the single act that secured his reputation for a generation, and it was later complicated considerably by other things. Whatever else is true of that reign, the recording of that broadcast exists and the coup ended within hours of it.
Meaning
the Lord is gracious, joined to a free man
Two names fused: the Hebrew sentence-name behind John, and the Germanic word for a free man behind Charles. Italian and Spanish write such pairs as a single word — Giancarlo, Juancarlos — where English keeps two.
Pronouncing Jancarlo
jan-KAR-loh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which is where the Italian fused form puts it. Spanish speakers reading the same letters say hwan-KAR-los for the unfused pair.

Fashion outlook
Jancarlo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and each is a complete name.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
- Both elements have documented meanings, which compounds often do not.
- Giancarlo and Juan Carlos are both commoner and will be written for it.
- Systems will sometimes split the fused name back into two fields.
- English speakers will say the j as an English j rather than a Spanish or Italian one.
