The story of Jami
Scotland is where the name became a royal one. Six kings of Scots were called James, one after another, across two centuries of minorities, regencies and violent deaths, and the sixth of them inherited the English throne and became the first king of both countries. Nowhere else in Europe did one name repeat like that in a single line. The short form came south with the family and has been in English mouths ever since, where it eventually detached, softened, and crossed to daughters. There is a second Jami with no connection to any of this: the Persian poet who is usually counted the last of the great classical masters, a man who wrote in verse and prose on love and the soul and whose work was read from Istanbul to Delhi for centuries.

One who follows, or supplants
The meaning belongs to James, and James is the same name as Jacob — the Latin Iacobus softened into Iacomus and came out of French as James. The Hebrew original is read as heel or supplanter, from the story of the birth, though the Bible's own explanation is a pun rather than an etymology and the underlying sense is not settled. Nothing about the shortened spelling changes any of this.

The Trudy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jami's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Trudy climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Trudy's path sketches the road Jami is walking now.
Jami sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and immediately readable, with no sound anyone can get wrong.
- It sits behind one of the most historically weighted names in English without carrying the weight.
- It works in a classroom and on a nameplate equally, which short forms often do not.
- Jamie is the spelling most people know, and hers will be written that way by default.
- The spelling is recorded for boys too, though the girls hold nearly all of it now.
- It reads as a nickname, so she may be asked what it is short for throughout her life.
