Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles in 1938, and as a teenager she rearranged her own first name into Etta James; her records for Chess, above all 'At Last', made her one of the great voices of rhythm and blues. The short form Etta has another famous and more mysterious bearer: Etta Place, the companion of the Sundance Kid, who went with him and Butch Cassidy to South America and then vanished from the record; her real name has never been established. Jamesetta was given by American families in the middle of the twentieth century.
