The story of Jamaine
The group signed to Motown in 1968 and had four consecutive number ones in 1970, and the brothers' names went into the birth records almost immediately: Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie all rise in the following years, and Jermaine rises the most because it was the least familiar. The name is French, from a Latin word meaning a full brother or sister, and had been in use in Louisiana and in Caribbean naming before that without spreading. What the curve shows is the ordinary mechanism of a broadcast name: an unfamiliar form becomes familiar through repetition, parents adopt it, and the respellings follow within a few years. Jamaine is one of those, replacing the unstressed first vowel with an a.

The Orman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jamaine's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orman climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orman's path sketches the road Jamaine is walking now.
Jamaine sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
