Jalon is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,468 boys against 74 girls since 1880.
Jalon is in the Bible, in a genealogy in Chronicles that almost nobody reads: one name in a list of sons, and then silence. It is also a Spanish word for a milestone, and a modern American name built from the Ja- prefix and an -lon ending. Three roads, one spelling.

Our story of Jalon
What Jalon really has is company. In the last forty years American families produced a run of names on one pattern, Jalen and Jaylen and Jaylon and Javon and Jamar, a Ja- opening and a light second syllable, passed from cousin to classmate and respelled each time so that no two were quite alike. Jalon is one of those, with the -lon ending that reads a little older and steadier than -len. That it also happens to be a name in Chronicles and a word in Spanish is a coincidence, and a pleasant one: a made name that turns out to have been made before.

Not established
The Hebrew Yalon appears once, in a genealogy in the first book of Chronicles, with no story attached; readings connecting it to lun, to lodge, are guesses made from the letters. Spanish jalon, a surveyor's marker or a milestone, is a real word but not a name. The American Jalon belongs to the Ja- prefix family alongside Jalen and Jaylon, and no line of descent joins any of these.
Pronouncing Jalon

The Brandt test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jalon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brandt climbed just as high around 1984, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brandt's path sketches the road Jalon is walking now.
Jalon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Easy to say and to spell after one hearing.
- Jay is a ready short form that works from nursery to office.
- It is far less used than Jalen while sounding almost the same.
- Jalen and Jaylon are much commoner, so this spelling will be corrected toward them.
- Two stress patterns compete and the spelling does not settle it.
- Spanish speakers will read the J as an h, which changes the name completely.
