Jahmel inserts an h to mark a long vowel, borrowing a device from Arabic transliteration where the length is a real distinction. English does not make that distinction, so the letter is doing nothing the ear can check.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jahmel

A gem and a bud are the same word. The Latin gemma meant a bud on a vine — the swelling that will open into a shoot — and it also meant a jewel, apparently on a visual comparison, since a polished stone and a fat bud have the same look. Which sense came first is not settled. Botany kept the original: a gemma is still a bud, and gemmation is the process of budding, which is also the word for how some animals reproduce by growing a copy of themselves. The jewel sense produced gem, gemstone and gemmology in English, and the plant sense survives almost nowhere outside a botanist's vocabulary. One word, two senses, and only the decorative one made it into ordinary speech.

The family it belongs to rests on an Arabic word about beauty, but this spelling cannot be assigned to it: Jamal, Jamel and Jahmal are all in the record together and the American builds among them outnumber the transliterations.

Pronouncing Jahmel

juh-MEL

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The inserted h is silent in English; in Arabic transliteration it would mark the vowel before it as long, which English does not distinguish.

Jahmel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jahmel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Six letters with no real difficulty make it quick to write.
What to consider
  • Jamal, Jamel and Jahmal are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The inserted letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • No meaning can honestly be claimed for this particular spelling.
