Where it comes from

The story of Jaelyn

Jael kills Sisera in Judges 4 and is praised for it in the Song of Deborah, which is one of the oldest passages in the Hebrew Bible. The modern American name is separate: Jaelyn appears in the registers from the 1990s, built on the same pattern as Jaylen, Kaelyn and Ashlyn, and peaked in the late 2000s.

Meaningscholars disagree

Not established

Usually read as a modern compound of Jae or Jay with the -lyn ending. A separate reading connects it to the Hebrew Yael, 'mountain goat' or 'ibex', the name of the woman in Judges 4. The compound itself is a modern American coinage; the Hebrew connection runs through sound.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaelyn went to 98 girls in 2025, but Jaelynn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 219, which makes it the 742nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,220 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 7,339 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,401 for Jaelyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
