Jacquie keeps the French spelling of a sound English would write with a k, and the name behind it was so ordinary in medieval France that it became the word for a peasant. When the countryside rose against the nobility in the fourteenth century, the rising was called the Jacquerie, after the nickname the nobles used for any farm laborer at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Jacquie

The nickname was Jacques Bonhomme, roughly good fellow Jack, and it was what the French nobility called the peasantry collectively and dismissively. In the summer of thirteen fifty-eight, after plague, defeat and the capture of the king, the peasants north of Paris rose, burned manor houses and killed a number of lords, and the nobility put it down with considerable savagery within a few weeks. The word for the rising is still the standard term in French and English for a peasant revolt of that kind. It is a good illustration of how completely a name can saturate a population: a first name so common that it stops naming individuals and starts naming a class, which happened to this one in France and to John in England at almost the same time.

supplanter

The parent name descends through Latin and Greek from the Hebrew name behind both Jacob and James, and the traditional reading connects it to a word about the heel or about supplanting. That reading is a pun made inside the biblical text rather than an etymology, and modern scholars treat it as such. The French feminine ending and the English respelling add nothing to the question.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew name behind both Jacob and James
  2. Jacques in French, and a byword for a peasant
  3. Jacqueline as the French feminine
  4. Jacquie as an English short form keeping the French letters

Two syllables, stress on the first. The cqu is French and spells a plain k; English would have written ck and been done with it, which is what the commoner spellings of this name do.

Fashion outlook

Jacquie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally familiar and never needs explaining.
  • The spelling keeps a visible link to the French original that the k spellings lose.
  • It works as a full name and as a short form at once.
What to consider
  • Jackie and Jacki are both commoner and this spelling will be converted into one of them.
  • The French letters are a permanent spelling-out on the telephone.
  • It reads as a pet form, and some people will keep asking for the long version.
