The story of Isidro
Isidore the Labourer was a twelfth-century Madrid farmworker; the story says angels ploughed his field while he prayed. He was canonized in 1622 and is patron of Madrid and of farmers. Isidore of Seville, separately, wrote the Etymologiae, the encyclopedia of the early Middle Ages. Isidro is in current American use.
Meaning
gift of Isis
From the Greek Isidoros — Isis, the Egyptian goddess, and doron, 'gift'. It is one of the few Christian saints' names built on a pagan deity, which survived because the name was already common when it was borne. The Greek elements are ordinary and the reading undisputed.

The Prentice test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Isidro's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Prentice climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Prentice's path sketches the road Isidro is walking now.
Isidro sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The gift-of-Isis meaning survived into Christian naming, which is genuinely remarkable.
- The patron of Madrid and the author of the Etymologiae both carry it.
- It is standard in Spanish without any change of spelling.
- The Egyptian goddess in the name is unexpected in a Catholic saint.
- Isidore is the English form and is far less used.
- Three syllables make it long for everyday use.
