Inessa
Feminine · “pure”
Agnes is Greek for pure, and the lamb she is always painted with is a mistranslation. Latin agnus, a lamb, sounds like the Greek hagne, holy, and the resemblance gave her an animal that her name never contained.

The story of Inessa
Agnes was a Roman martyr of the early fourth century, killed at about thirteen, and her cult was enormous; on her feast day two lambs are still blessed at her basilica in Rome and their wool used for the pallia sent to archbishops. The lamb entered her iconography by way of the Latin pun and has stayed. Spanish took the name as Ines, and Russian borrowed the Spanish form in the twentieth century as Inessa, most visibly through Inessa Armand, the French-Russian revolutionary and close associate of Lenin. The name reached United States records with post-Soviet migration and had its best year in 2005.
Meaning
pure, holy
Greek hagne, pure or holy, the feminine of hagnos. Latin agnus, a lamb, is a separate word, and the association of Saint Agnes with a lamb comes from the resemblance rather than from the name; it was established early and is now inseparable from her. Inessa is the Russian form of the Spanish Ines, which is Agnes.

The Graziella test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Inessa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Graziella climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Graziella's path sketches the road Inessa is walking now.
Inessa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
