The story of Ikechukwu
Igbo naming produces sentences, and the sentence is chosen for the circumstances of a birth or the family's situation, so a name is a small piece of biography. The ike element runs through a large set of them, and Chinua Achebe used one in Things Fall Apart: Ikemefuna is the hostage boy given to Umuofia in compensation for a killing, raised in Okonkwo's household for three years and then killed by the elders' decision, with Okonkwo striking the final blow so as not to look weak. The name means let my strength not be lost, and Achebe, who chose his characters' names carefully, gave it to a boy whose death is the hinge of the book.
