Where it comes from

The story of Humberto

Humbert I was count of Savoy in the eleventh century and founded a dynasty that ruled until 1946; two kings of Italy carried the name as Umberto. Spanish and Portuguese use Humberto. Spanish-speaking families brought it to the United States, where it appears in the registers and is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

bright warrior; bright cub

From the Germanic hun, read either as 'bear cub' or 'warrior', and beraht, 'bright' or 'famous'. The beraht element is settled and closes Albert, Robert and Herbert. The first is disputed between the animal and the fighter, and both readings are documented.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The bright element is transparent and belongs to a large Germanic family.
  • A dynasty that ruled for nine centuries carries the name.
  • Beto is a warm and very widely used short form.
What to consider
  • The first element is genuinely disputed between cub and warrior.
  • The h is silent in Spanish and sounded in English.
  • Umberto is the Italian form and is close enough to be confused.
