Hortensia
Feminine · “of the garden”
In half of Europe this name is a flower. The hydrangea is called hortensia in French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and several other languages — it is what you ask for in a garden center — and the plant was named after a woman rather than the other way round.

The story of Hortensia
Nobody can say which Hortense the flower was named after. The botanist who brought the plant back from the Indian Ocean named it in the seventeen-hundreds and the candidates offered since include an astronomer's wife who calculated eclipses, a prince's wife who was on the voyage, and a general reference to garden plants. Each explanation has been repeated confidently in print and none has documentation behind it. It is a small and rather satisfying case of a very common plant carrying a woman's name that the botanical record simply failed to write down.

Fashion outlook
Hortensia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
