Where it comes from

The story of Hortense

Quintus Hortensius was Cicero's chief rival at the Roman bar and, by most accounts, the better performer; his daughter Hortensia made a public speech against a tax on wealthy women that Roman writers recorded with some surprise. The name survived in France and was carried by Hortense de Beauharnais, Josephine's daughter, whom Napoleon married to his brother and made queen of Holland. Her prominence put the name into general French use in the nineteenth century, and it reached America from there rather than from Rome.

Meaning

of the garden

Latin hortus means a garden or an enclosed piece of ground, and the same root gives horticulture and, through a different line, the yard in an English farmyard. Hortensius is the family name built on it, and Hortensia is its feminine. The derivation is standard. The hydrangea is called hortensia in several European languages, named in the eighteenth century after a woman rather than after the garden, which is a pleasing loop.

Hortense sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 223 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Hortense sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Latin behind it is concrete and pleasant, and the Roman family is genuinely well documented.
  • It has a flower named after the same name, which very few names can claim.
  • The stress at the end gives it a clean finish against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • The second syllable lands on the English word tense, and the resemblance is heard immediately.
  • The name reads as distinctly French and distinctly of an earlier century.
  • It is among the rarer names still in the American record, so a child carrying it will explain it often.
