The story of Hollyann
In 1956 Charles Hardin Holley signed a recording contract on which his surname was misspelled Holly, and he kept it; as Buddy Holly he wrote 'That'll Be the Day' and 'Peggy Sue' before he died in a plane crash at twenty-two. Holly Hobbie is not a character's invented name but the artist's own: Holly Hobbie drew a girl in a giant patchwork bonnet for American Greetings cards around 1970, and the girl took her name and appeared on lunchboxes, dolls and bedspreads across the country. Hollyann is a later twentieth-century joining of Holly and Ann.
