The story of Hobert
Hubert of Liège was an eighth-century bishop whose legend has him converted by a vision of a stag while hunting on Good Friday, which made him the patron of hunters and put his name on a great many European dogs and villages. The Normans brought it to England, where medieval speech gave Hobart and Hobbard, and those became surnames. American families used Hobert as a given name through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, peaking around 1918.
