The story of Hettie
Henrietta arrived in English from French in the seventeenth century and was in heavy use by the nineteenth; Hester was the older English form of Esther and was equally common. Both produced Het- clippings, and English added the affectionate -ie that it added to everything in that period. Hettie was registered as a legal name in nineteenth-century American records and peaked around 1885.

Not established
Through Henrietta, the meaning is the Germanic haim, 'home', and ric, 'ruler' — the same compound as Henry. Through Hester, it is Esther, usually read from the Persian stareh, 'star', though that is contested and the biblical text presents Esther as a second name for Hadassah, 'myrtle'. The short form does not choose.

Fashion outlook
Hettie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

- Short, warm and easy for a young child to say and write.
- It is genuinely rare now while being entirely traditional.
- The meaning depends entirely on which parent name a family has in mind.
- It is firmly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
