Where it comes from

The story of Hester

In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is condemned by her Puritan town to wear a scarlet A, and she wears it with such dignity that it comes to mean something else entirely. Lady Hester Stanhope, niece of the prime minister William Pitt, left England for the Levant, lived among the Druze in the mountains of Lebanon, and led a dig at Ashkelon guided by a medieval manuscript, one of the first excavations in the Holy Land. The name is recorded for a very few boys, but it is a woman's name everywhere.

Hester sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 24 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Hester sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a long literary and historical tradition.
  • Hettie and Hessie give warm short forms.
  • It is almost never given now, so it stands out.
What to consider
  • Many will think first of The Scarlet Letter.
  • It sounds old-fashioned to many ears.
